Igo Family » Portrait Session » New Orleans Audubon Park

When I have the opportunity to photograph families with toddlers, it’s all about following the toddler’s lead, and getting on their level. No two toddler sessions are the same, but I’ve found this simple strategy works well much of the time: Typically, they’ll be in a good mood to start off the session, or at least on good behavior, because they don’t know me yet, and may be shy or reserved. So I like to start with some groupings, so the little one is the comfort of their parents’ arms, while they ease into the idea of a stranger taking their picture. After some time posing, they’ll be ready to run off some energy, and have usually become more comfortable with me at this point, so I’ll chase them around a bit to catch those playful candid shots. We’ll go back and forth between posed and candids, and the next time they need a break is a perfect opportunity for portraits of just Mom and Dad! Because, let’s be honest, we can never have enough of those.
